Head & Hands - The Rhythm Within, with Christina Lovey

In this workshop, we will explore our own personal rhythm as a way of connecting with the healing force residing in our bodies. Join us to engage in a series of dynamic activities that will allow us to locate and express our inner rhythm, in a safe, supportive environment. Using guided and explorative exercises, we will use our hands, feet, voices, and bodies to connect with and express our own personal rhythmic mantra to sooth and ground us.

From our earliest moments in the womb, we become familiar with our mother's heartbeat, creating a safe and steady chamber around us. Once born, we begin to march to the beat of our own rhythm, our heart pumps and regulates us, our blood pulses through our veins, even our peristaltic wave pulsates constantly as we digest our food. Yet most of these processes remain unconscious and automatic. We learn how to enjoy music and move to it, yet have become disconnected from listening to the innate rhythm within.

Whether you’re drawn to connecting with your body through yoga or movement practices, looking to activate healing, or just curious to experience a new form of energetic expression - this class will guide you.

You will explore

  • How to tune in to your natural rhythm
  • How to use your body to make rhythmic sounds
  • How to construct and express your own rhythmic mantra
  • The connection between movement and meditation

You can expect

  • partner work
  • movement and stretches
  • chanting and meditation
  • breath and voice work
  • tap dance inspired exercises
  • body percussion
  • shamanic movement

Christina Lovey first put on a pair of tap shoes when she was seven and she has not stopped dancing since. Having taught tap and other forms of dance for some years, she developed a special interest in the healing power of rhythm following a period of ill health. Dance, specifically the rhythmic function of dance, helped in the healing process and Christina became interested in the value of using rhythm as a way to maintain health and wellbeing.

She set up the Women’s Rhythm Tap Collective in 2013 so that she could share the joy of tap dance with others, however, she is also passionate about sharing the benefits of rhythm and helping others to find the rhythm within. Christina has been teaching dance and performing arts since the early 1980’s; she is a performer and artist who uses tap dance in her practice.
